1984- Intimacy

Throughout human existence, sex has always been a risky topic to talk about in an educational environment. In the past, fornication would rarely be discussed; but now in the 21st century, it's become more of an open topic. Personally, I think the role of sex in our society is power. The novel 1984 by George Orwell explores intimate relationships in a dystopian society. In this story, sex is a power used against people who possess it, like the main character Winston Smith. The political party forces people to push down their sexual desires. "1984" portrays intimacy with the dark haired girl, the prole prostitute, and Winston's wife Katherine.

In the novel "1984", the dark haired girl is an example of intimacy. She first appears in Winston's dream. The setting was the Golden Country where the girl takes off her clothes and runs towards him. Winston's emotions towards her are very strong. Because of his paranoia, he thinks that she's a Party agent. Like sex in general; the dark haired girl is treated like an un fathomable mystery.

In Winston's personal diary, he talks about his intimate intercourse experiences. To fulfill his sexual appetite, he has sex with a prole prostitute. The Party has a strong hatred of sex and they want to take away the lust and pleasure of sex. The prole prostitute was old and wasn't good looking, but Winston desperately needs satisfaction.  In his eyes, this sexual intercourse affair was an act of rebellion.

The Political party in the dystopian society has a strong hate for sex. Winston’s wife Katherine was the typical household wife. Her life was typical and mechanic only for the Political party. Her only purpose was to reproduce. like every other woman. The outcome of this was to only have a bigger society. Unfortunately, Winston and Katherine split up because they weren't able to have any children.
